Miniatures pt98 – War Vixen Rider
Here is the War Vixen rider from the Ral Partha Europe Blighthaven warband that I hadn’t painted in my last post. Used the same set of colours, and painted the horse with a black colour using Paynes Gray.

Here are the War Vixens from the Demonworld range of Ral Partha Europe. Actually it’s the foot War Vixens from Blighthaven warbands supplemented by a few Ice Witches from Demonworld. The Blighthaven warbands are skirmish packs from select Demonworld miniatures so they all fit well together. Since I like to dedicate more of my focus when painting mounted miniatures, I didn’t paint the mounted War Vixen from this set in this go.
I went mostly with red and blue purple colours for the clothing, and also tried out some new colours I got – copper and paynes gray for some details.
I really like paynes gray for black applications over poor man’s zenithal aka nowadays slapchop. Paynes gray is a semi-opaque cool dark gray colour so the underlying details still come through.
Adding some monsters to my Five Leagues roster. Here are two Battle Valor Stone Golems that I’ve painted in a different scene to look more like Earth and Magma Golems or Elementals.
For the Earth Golem I went with a mostly gray tone with brown parts, washed it with Military Shader for a wet look and drybrushed white to bring back the highlights. Added tufts of grass and static grass on it for a more realistic feel like it broke out of the ground.
For the Magma golem I went with an inverse zenithal. White primed then drybrushed black as a base. Then did a yellow paint, crackle medium and burnt umber overbrushing.
Also a Hulking Beastman from Ral Partha Europe Demonworld range that reminded me a lot of the classic Amiga (and PC) game Moonstone, because of its similarity to the Baloks!
Three more wood elf archers from Ral Partha Europe, Demonworld range, to complement my existing warband. I tried to paint the same colours as the rest of my warband, but I think I’m a bit off. I should write down my colour mixtures…
In the same concept as my extra skeletons, here are a couple Dark Elf Swordsmen from Ral Partha Europe, Demonworld range. I haven’t decided on the shield painting, so I’ve left it as plain steel for now.
Grinding through on my pre-IOSS lead of shame stockpile, I painted a couple of Demonworld Death Knights by Ral Partha Europe.
In general I try to have unique poses for my miniatures, and scrolling through the RPE webshop I found a couple single skeleton miniatures that were missing from the dozen-strong warband. In an effort for completeness, I got these ‘death knights’ just in time.
With the pill bases and some larger round bases, I proceeded with the rest of my Demonworld pile. A chaotic polar bear, two bears, a mountain lion and a couple of giant spiders.
For the polar bear I went with a snow textured base using cotton and pva.
The mountain lion came out a bit muddled, I’m not very happy with my final result there, but it’s okay for the table.
My warbases order arrived so I could work on my larger miniatures. Here are 2 Dire Wolves and 5 Wolves from the wolf pack of the Demonworld line of Ral Partha Europe.
I varied the darkness of the fur coat by diluting my final wash in different concentrations.
Here are a few single miniatures from the Demonworld line of Ral Partha Europe. A temple guardian and a few monsters. A couple werewolves, a vampire coven and a harpy.
In this batch job, I am still trying a few combinations of acrylic inks. Using transparent inks over a different color basecoat to achieve a combined color in the end. For the deep red inside of the vampire cloaks, I did a pink undercoat followed by red ink.
I also switched to a combined base texturing technique. I used CA glue and baking soda on the exterior ring of the base, and PVA glue and coffee grinds on the interior ring of the base. This gives a gradual change from a finer grain to a coarser one, stop the PVA from flowing outside the base and protects the miniature feet from climbing PVA glue. I’m going to keep this.
With this post, I’ve reached my photos backlog with up to date paintings. This means that I will be only able to post miniatures posts as I paint them, and it will take longer.
Here are 4 big ones in 15mm. An Ogre, a Troll, and two Minotaurs. These are from the Ral Partha Europe Demonworld range.
Painting the squares on the Ogre pants was hard, but I really enjoyed the end result and it goes well with the stripes.
For the troll, I did something I hadn’t done before. Instead of painting it green directly, I gave it a light blue basecoat, followed by a yellow ink once dry. My yellow ink is transparent and weak in pigment, so I had this beautiful green as a result, with yellowed parts.
I tried to do something similar with the Minotaurs, using red ink over yellow ochre, hence the evil demonic look.
