Miniatures pt98 – War Vixen Rider
Here is the War Vixen rider from the Ral Partha Europe Blighthaven warband that I hadn’t painted in my last post. Used the same set of colours, and painted the horse with a black colour using Paynes Gray.

Here are the War Vixens from the Demonworld range of Ral Partha Europe. Actually it’s the foot War Vixens from Blighthaven warbands supplemented by a few Ice Witches from Demonworld. The Blighthaven warbands are skirmish packs from select Demonworld miniatures so they all fit well together. Since I like to dedicate more of my focus when painting mounted miniatures, I didn’t paint the mounted War Vixen from this set in this go.
I went mostly with red and blue purple colours for the clothing, and also tried out some new colours I got – copper and paynes gray for some details.
I really like paynes gray for black applications over poor man’s zenithal aka nowadays slapchop. Paynes gray is a semi-opaque cool dark gray colour so the underlying details still come through.
In my fantasy games I found myself often lacking miniatures for giant rats, which is a very common trope for fantasy. After carefully considering my options I decided to go ahead with the ones from DSA range of Ral Partha Europe, which is not a 15mm range, but a 28mm range. That’s not a problem since who’s to say how big a giant rat should be? I loved the sculpts and I wasn’t disappointed.
As for the paint scheme I wanted to give some variety since between the rats, so there’s many different coats, with darker colours being the norm.
Here are three winged monsters. A Manticore and a Griffon from Alternative Armies Hordes of Things range, and a Forest Dragon from Ral Partha Europe The Dark Eye range. The last one is a 28mm range but this is a small dragon and would fit my 15mm range with no issue.
I painted the Manticore in a quite classic colour scheme. For the Griffon I went with a bald eagle inspiration for the eagle part. For the dragon I went with a Black Dragon colour scheme, by painting it mostly black and washing it with Military Shader to give it a more acid/slimy look.
Adding some monsters to my Five Leagues roster. Here are two Battle Valor Stone Golems that I’ve painted in a different scene to look more like Earth and Magma Golems or Elementals.
For the Earth Golem I went with a mostly gray tone with brown parts, washed it with Military Shader for a wet look and drybrushed white to bring back the highlights. Added tufts of grass and static grass on it for a more realistic feel like it broke out of the ground.
For the Magma golem I went with an inverse zenithal. White primed then drybrushed black as a base. Then did a yellow paint, crackle medium and burnt umber overbrushing.
Also a Hulking Beastman from Ral Partha Europe Demonworld range that reminded me a lot of the classic Amiga (and PC) game Moonstone, because of its similarity to the Baloks!
Three more wood elf archers from Ral Partha Europe, Demonworld range, to complement my existing warband. I tried to paint the same colours as the rest of my warband, but I think I’m a bit off. I should write down my colour mixtures…
In the same concept as my extra skeletons, here are a couple Dark Elf Swordsmen from Ral Partha Europe, Demonworld range. I haven’t decided on the shield painting, so I’ve left it as plain steel for now.
Grinding through on my pre-IOSS lead of shame stockpile, I painted a couple of Demonworld Death Knights by Ral Partha Europe.
In general I try to have unique poses for my miniatures, and scrolling through the RPE webshop I found a couple single skeleton miniatures that were missing from the dozen-strong warband. In an effort for completeness, I got these ‘death knights’ just in time.
Cnidocytes are alien jelly fish from the Ral Partha Europe Critical Mass range.
Went with a purple body, yellow tentacles and pink crest.
These are not the droids you are looking for…or are they?
Assorted droids from various manufacturers. A Drone Walker from Ral Partha Europe Critical Mass range, a Dominator Sphere from Alternative Armies Hordes of the Future range, and a few Floating Killer Robots from Khurasan Miniatures 15mm Sci Fi range.
